Fuel crisis pressures transport sector
As fuel prices continue to climb at unprecedented levels, the transport sector is facing mounting financial pressure, with many operators experiencing tightening margins and heightened uncertainty.

David Boyce, CEO of the New Zealand Trucking Association (NZTA) stresses that in volatile conditions like these, access to accurate and timely information is critical.

“There are moments in business when the value of belonging to an industry association becomes unmistakably clear, and this is one of them.”

With global fuel prices driving rapid cost increases, operators must make swift decisions that directly affect business sustainability. In this context, industry representation plays a crucial role.

“As an association, we are at the table with the Government and key stakeholders,” says Boyce. “That means we can provide our members with clear, practical advice based on real insight, not speculation or media-driven narratives.”

Recent weeks have seen a surge in businesses joining the NZTA, reflecting the growing need for guidance, tools, and direct support.

“Businesses don’t just need headlines, they need solutions,” Boyce says. “They need access to tools, reliable information, and someone they can call who understands the realities of running a transport business.”

The Association offers practical support, including discounted fuel pricing, advisory services, and tools designed to strengthen financial resilience.

Key resources include the Fuel Adjustment Sheet, which helps operators calculate and pass through fluctuating fuel costs, and the Cost Modelling Service, which highlights gaps between pricing and real operating costs.

Boyce notes that the pressure of rising costs also underscores the importance of health and safety. Tight margins and rapid decisions can put day-to-day safety at risk, making structured systems essential.

Programmes like TruckSafe provide a comprehensive safety management framework tailored to transport operators, ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act while supporting operational efficiency.

“Belonging to an association is about more than representation, it’s about connection, capability, and having access to the right information at the right time,” says David Boyce. “Right now, that support has never been more important.”

Membership with the NZTA starts from $399 + GST per annum, offering access to the Large Fuel Scheme, cost modelling, safety tools, and ongoing business support.
