National Road Carriers has begun its 90th year representing New Zealand’s road freight industry, with a year of events and stories planned to mark the milestone. The anniversary programme started on 5 October 2026.
The association was founded in 1936 by 29 Auckland owner-carriers who wanted a united industry voice. They were small operators who lacked influence and bargaining power on their own.
Chief Executive Justin Tighe-Umbers says nine decades is a time to reflect on decades of change. Over that period the industry has worked through economic cycles, regulatory reform, fuel shocks, infrastructure rebuilds, workforce shortages and political transitions.
One of the association’s key achievements was advocating for High Productivity Motor Vehicle rules. The change took effect in 2010 and allowed trucks with a permit to exceed the 44 tonne limit that applies without one and stretch beyond 20 metres in length, on routes approved for them.
More recent changes include major improvements to health and safety and to vehicles, along with new technology and processes. Those include containerised freight, swing lifts, vehicle booking systems, GPS and round the clock port access.
Chair Ian Newey says the country depends on a safe, productive and resilient road freight system. “As we celebrate 90 years of representing New Zealand’s road freight industry, we not only recognise NRC’s proud history, but look to our future. We are committed to continuing to advocate for operators, deliver valuable services, and strengthen the industry for decades to come,” he says.
The programme is headlined by platinum sponsor Z Energy, a longtime supporter of the association. It will include a coordinated series of industry workshops, 90 stories in 52 weeks, media, videos and wider industry engagement.
Gold sponsors include Fruehauf, Teletrac Navman, Halls Cold Chain Logistics and Carters Tyre Service. Silver sponsors include BPW New Zealand, Chester Grey Chartered Accountants and Advisors, MITO, Marsh and NZI. More businesses are coming on board as bronze sponsors, and opportunities to get involved remain open.
Tighe-Umbers says sponsors are backing the programme as a way to promote their businesses, tailor their partnership to their objectives, reach their target audience and show support for the industry that keeps freight moving.
The celebrations will involve the association’s members as well as associated businesses and industry stakeholders across the country. The year will end with a black tie dinner planned for September 2027.
